This medical treatment involves applying a chemical solution to the skin that causes your skin to “blister”, and then eventually, peel off.
Sounds crazy, I know, but the result is typically smoother skin and less wrinkles than the previous skin.

Almost like a snake shedding the old, cracked and dated skin and breaking out into a new supple and smooth look.

You can do chemical peels on your face, neck or hands.

You can use them to:

• Reduce fine lines around the mouth and under the eyes
• Reverse sun damage and age-caused wrinkles

What’s more:

• Mild scarring can be improved
• Certain types of acne can be treated

Pregnancy or using birth control pills can cause dark spots (melasma) – chemical peels can make them vanish!

It also works to eliminate age spots and freckles, while simultaneously improving skin texture and appearance.

The treated skin becomes more sensitive after a chemical peel, so it’s important to use sunscreen daily. The label should read “broad spectrum” and at least an SPF of 30, meaning that it provides protection against both UVA and UVB radiations and provides enough protection to keep you from getting burnt – aka buy the good stuff, wear a wide-brimmed cap, and limit your exposure to the sun between 10 am and 2 pm.

Are YOU a good candidate for a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are more suitable for patients with fair skin and lighter hair. Depending on the problem, chemical peels may be more effective for those with darker skin; however, you may experience a more uneven complexion after treatment.

Chemical peels are not recommended for skin with severe wrinkles or skin that sags.

If you’re dealing with that, you may need to have other cosmetic procedures performed first, including a facelift or brow lift or eyelid lift. An experienced dermatologist can advise you on the best treatment option for your needs, listen to them!

The Chemical Peel: Before You Begin

If you are prone to scarring or have cold sores that come back frequently, consult your doctor before you start this procedure. Your doctor might ask that you stop using certain medications before you undergo a chemical peel; they might also recommend antiviral or antibiotic drugs.

Discuss your options with your doctor about the extent of your skin peel.

The condition of your skin, as well as your treatment goals will influence this decision.

Find someone to drive you home after the procedure; it’s always nice to be chauffeured around, especially right after a procedure!

What A Chemical Peel Is Like

A chemical peel can be done in the office of a physician, hospital, or in some cases, a medical spa under the care of a doctor. This is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require you to stay overnight (no slumber party for you!).

Your skin will be thoroughly cleaned by the professional performing your peel. The professional will then apply multiple chemical solutions to the small areas where you want to see newer skin.

Most people experience a slight burning sensation during a chemical peel, but this sensation only lasts for about 5-10 minutes. After that, there is a small sensation of stinging that can often be eased by using cool compresses. If it gets too bad, you might be given some pain medication after or during your skin peel, especially if you’re doing a deeper peel.

The Chemical Peel: What to Expect

The type of chemical peel used will determine the reaction that occurs. The process usually causes redness and then peeling (whole process lasts between three and seven days). You can repeat mild peels at intervals of one to four weeks until you achieve the desired look.

Deep and medium-depth peeling may cause swelling and blisters. These may crack, brown and then peel off in seven to fourteen days. If necessary, medium-depth peels can be repeated within six to twelve months.

You may require bandages to protect the treated skin for several days.

Your new, fragile skin will need protection from the sun for several weeks after your chemical peel.

Potential Complications

As with everything we do, there’s always a small element of risk.

Certain skin types may experience a permanent or temporary color change after a chemical treatment. This could be due to factors such as birth control pills or subsequent pregnancy.

Certain areas on the face could scar and certain people are more susceptible to scarring, but scarring can be managed with great results if it does occur.

There is an increased risk that cold sores will reactivate in those who have had previous herpes outbreaks. You can get medication from your doctor to treat or prevent this.
